Electrified palisade fences

electrified palisadeAn electrified palisade fence is a steel or aluminium palisade fence used as a defensive barrier for the protection of property, particularly in isolated regions.

Typical construction

Electrified palisade fences are usually made from painted mild steel, galvanized steel, stainless steel or aluminium. Typically the fences are 2.4 metres (7 ft 10 in). All electric fences have energisers which send high voltage electric pulses through the palisade, usually at a frequency of 1 Hertz (one pulse per second).

Uses

The two most common uses of electrified palisade fencing is in protecting isolated property and in the defence of high security facilities. Palisade electric fences are used in most countries, particularly where there is little vegetation to short circuit the fence or where the costs of security personnel is high in relation to automated security equipment.

Isolated property is vulneelectrified fencingrable in that it is difficult or time consuming to send security personnel to respond and so must be self sufficient with an automated security system. The electric pulse is a strong deterrent for criminals, while the palisade fence is mechanically stronger than a typical steel cable electric fence being able to withstand impact from wildlife, small falling trees and wildfires.

South Africa

Due to the high levels of crime in South Africa, it is common for residential houses to have perimeter defences. The City of Johannesburg promotes the use of palisade fencing over opaque, usually brick, walls as criminals cannot hide as easily behind the fence. In the City of Johannesburg manual on safety one can read about best practices and maintenance of palisade fencing, such as not growing vegetation in front of palisades as this allows criminals to make an unseen breach.

Mudjacking Concrete

mudjackingConcrete raising or levelling is a procedure that attempts to lift, and correct, uneven concrete surfaces, by lifting and altering the foundation that the structure is sitting on.  It is a way cheaper alternative to replacement.

In some areas where there is continuous heavy rainfall, soil can be eroded and washed away.   This causes the concrete structure to start sagging and crack.  If it is not remedied timeously, then the structure will eventually have to be replaced at a huge cost.

Concrete is known as mud to those who work with it, hence mudjacking is the process of lifting the structure by pumping concrete underneath the structure to be raised.  Although different types of concrete can be used, it is usually a low strength concrete that is used in mudjacking.

On average, mudjacking work usually can be completed in a couple of hours, but larger jobs can take up to a whole day.  It is very seldom that more than a day is required.

before and afterThe footing of a structure is a very important part of the foundation.  Usually concrete with rebar reinforcement to prevent settling is used, as the footings are very important in areas with troublesome soils. Usually the concrete is poured into an excavated trench with the reinforcement bars.

It is not only heavy rain that can erode soil, rodents that burrow beneath the surface have also been know to cause the soil to erode as the soil settles on the tunnels they dig and eventually it causes the foundations to start settling and cracks appear in the structures.

Regular inspections and cleaning of your walls will enable you to detect any cracking early, before it becomes a huge problem.  You will need to take action to remedy the situation to prevent too much damage being done to the structure which will then only be fixed by replacing.
